The province will spend $250,000 in extra funding this year on early childhood literacy projects, Education Minister Nancy Allan said today.
The Early Literacy Intervention Initiative was announced before Allan read to Grade 1 and 2 students at Greenway School to kick off I Love to Read Month.
The province says the Early Literacy Intervention Initiative supports programs that increase the reading and writing ability of the lowest achieving students in Grade 1 of the English or French programs and Grades 1 or 2 of the French immersion program.
Today's announcement brings total funding for the initiative to $7 million for the 2013-14 school year, the province says.
