Province adds more Crown prosecutors, support staff

The Manitoba government is adding 11 Crown prosecutors and six prosecutorial support staff and other positions to make the justice system function better, Attorney General Andrew Swan said this morning.

The new positions will cost about $2.5 million a year.

The province will also add 7.5 court clerk positions and six sheriffs, Swan told a news conference at the Legislative Building.

"The staff we are adding in critical areas across the justice system will enhance life in our communities and make the justice system function better," Swan said.

Since 1999, the province said it has increased investment in prosecutions by close to 200 per cent.

Crown attorneys prepare and prosecute cases where it’s believed a crime took place. They are charged with making sure the trial process is fair to everyone and evidence is thoroughly and accurately presented in court. They also help to maintain the integrity and independence of the justice process, Swan said.
