Province commits $3M for programs for at-risk youth

WINNIPEG - The provincial government has committed $3 million in funding to nine community-based education programs for at-risk youth under the Bright Futures banner.

Premier Greg Selinger announced Tuesday that $425,000 of the funding will support the expansion of the Pathways to Education effort in the North Point Douglas community. The program focuses on mentoring, tutoring and attendance monitoring for students in grades 9 to 12.

"Our government has tripled funding for Bright Futures since it was introduced in 2008 because we see positive results when students stay in school, graduate and plan for post-secondary education," Selinger said in a government release.

"Programs funded through Bright Futures aim to address both the social and economic challenges that some people face, which can be eased or eliminated through advocacy, tutoring, mentoring and financial support."

Other programs receiving funding support include

  • Career Trek, Power Up! — Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg,
  • Community Schools Investigators (CSI) Summer Learning Enrichment Program,
  • Bursary Management for CSI Students,
  • Medical Careers Exploration Program, and
  • The Peaceful Village — Manitoba School Improvement Program.
