Province funds 14 conservation-focused projects

Fourteen projects will get financial help from the province’s Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention (WRAPP) Fund, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh said today.

The 14 projects will see more than $175,000 in funding and include a composting project for apartment residents in West Broadway and expansion of the recycling facility at Peguis First Nation. The WRAPP Fund supports waste reduction and pollution prevention practices in Manitoba.

The projects are:

Bird Studies Canada – $25,000 to conduct bird breeding surveys for the Manitoba Breeding Bird Atlas in remote areas of Manitoba.
Cormorant Lake School – $4,500 to support the purchase of a trailer to store recyclables before transportation to a recycling facility.
CleanFarms Inc. – $25,000 to pilot and support a three-day collection event for obsolete animal health products in conjunction with the obsolete pesticide container disposal program.
KGS Group – $7,975 for research into alternative techniques to improve management of leachate or liquids from landfills.
Manitoba Model Forest Inc. – $8,750 to support caribou re-collaring efforts for two research projects.
Manitoba Model Forest Inc.– $25,000 to research moose populations at immediate risk of local extinction.
North Point Douglas Seniors Association – $5,000 to support the development of a composting program for 200 seniors.
Spirit Way Inc. – $12,000 to host a wolf and carnivore conference in Thompson.
Solid Waste Association of North America, Northern Lights Chapter – $5,000 to support a two-day conference in Brandon on waste and natural disaster issues.
The Pas and Area Recycling – $25,000 to purchase mobile recycling trailers and a baler for the region.
Town of Treherne – $5,000 to support the development of a household composting program.
Peguis First Nation – $20,000 to support the expansion of a recycling centre for the collection of e-waste and hazardous household waste.
West Broadway Development Corporation – $4,800 to support the purchase of materials to develop a composting project for apartment residents.
Winnipeg Repair Education and Cycling Hub (WRENCH) – $5,000 to support bicycle repair workshops for youth and low-income individuals and to increase used bicycle donations.
