Province gives divisions $4M to reduce class sizes

The Manitoba government will give school divisions an extra $4 million this coming year to help phase in the province's new class size restrictions in kindergarten through Grade 3.

The money will allow school boards to hire an additional 69 teachers this year, including 12 for the Winnipeg School Division, Education Minister Nancy Allan said this morning.

The NDP government wants to cap class sizes in the early years at 20 in all schools by September 2017.

Last year, it spent $3 million to hire 79 new teachers. Total additional funding for 2013-2014 will be $7 million.

The money is targeted at school divisions where class sizes are still above the 20 student limit. The funding is in addition to the $27.2 million in new provincial education funding Allan announced last week.

Allan told reporters at an announcement at John M. King School on Agnes Street that the class-size reduction program will be cost-neutral for school divisions. Increased provincial grants are designed to pay for the entire additional cost, she said.
