Province issues heat advisory

A word to the wise for those out fringing in the sun. The Government of Manitoba issued a heat advisory today as the province faces high temperatures and high humidity over the next two days.

The advisory was issued for the southern part of the province and communities between Dauphin and Berens River where humidity is expected to be high.

The Office of the Chief Provincial Public Health Officer said you can prevent heat-related illnesses by:

  • drinking lots of water,
  • limiting physical activity,
  • wearing a hat or using an umbrella,
  • wearing loose-fitting clothing,
  • going to place with air conditioning such as malls and restaurants if there’s no A/C at home,
  • taking a bath or shower,
  • and not drinking too much alcohol.

Make sure to check up on family and friends when it gets hot, they added, especially elderly people and people with chronic illnesses.

You know you’ve been in the heat too long if you’re feeling nauseous, dizzy, weak, faint and confused. Having a headache, breathing rapidly and dehydration are also signs of being exposed to heat for too long.
