Province issues heat warning

The province is urging Manitobans to stay cool and take caution as heat and humidity is set to soar today.
Wednesday’s forecast for Winnipeg calls for bright sun and temperatures rising up to 34 C. Coupled with high humidity - it stood at 88 per cent by 8 a.m. this morning - the province took the step this week of warning Manitobans to guard against heat-stroke. There’s also sunburns to consider, especially as the UV index is expected to reach 8, which is very high.
In a release, the province reminded Manitobans to drink lots of water, limit physical activities, and make sure to find ways to stay cool. The effects of heat can build up over a period of days, the province said.
Caregivers should keep on the lookout for anyone experiencing headache, nausea, weakness, dizziness, fainting, confusion or dehydration. Anyone with those symptoms should be moved to a cool place and given sips of water or other liquids. Seniors, young children and people with certain chronic conditions are especially at risk of heat-related illness.
Meanwhile, there may be only a little relief from the heat soon: Thursday’s forecast calls for the temperature to drift down to a more manageable 25 C, while Friday is expected to creep back up to 29 C. Both days are forecast to be sunny, though clouds and rain may move in this weekend.
