Province provides 1,000 free defibrillators to public places

The province is providing 1,000 free defibrillators to public places as the date nears for the lifesaving machines to be required throughout Manitoba.

The province passed legislation last year requiring automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in gyms, arenas, community centres, schools, golf courses, airports and other public facilities. The deadline to acquire and install them is Jan. 31, 2014.

The free AEDs will be distributed on a first come, first served basis by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. The foundation has also negotiated a discount price with the supplier so that those needing to purchase them will be able to buy one for under $2,000.

AEDs deliver an electric shock to the heart and are programmed to detect if a person is having an irregular heart rhythm that indicates potential cardiac arrest.

Defibrillation used with CPR can improve cardiac survival rates by 75 per cent or more over CPR alone.

See a full list of designated public places that will be required to have a defibrillator on site.
