Province records fourth H1N1 death
WINNIPEG — A fourth Manitoban has died since last fall from the H1N1 virus, the province announced this afternoon.
The individual, an adult between ages 18 and 65, had underlying health conditions. No further information about the individual was provided, as is the Health Department's custom.
The province said the H1N1 virus continues to circulate within Manitoba, and it is expected that people will continue to get sick from it. The government is still urging Manitobans to get the flu shot as soon as possible.
Two-thirds of Manitobans have yet to be vaccinated for H1N1. As of Jan. 5, more than 442,000 shots had been given, including 7,300 in doctors' offices. As of today, 160 Manitoba doctors offices have ordered 30,000 doses of the vaccine.
Between Dec. 22 and Jan. 4, two Manitobans with H1N1 or symptoms of a severe respiratory illness were admitted to an intensive care unit. Eighteen Manitobans with H1N1 have been admitted to an ICU since the second wave of the H1N1 flu began.
In the first wave of H1N1 influenza last spring, seven Manitobans died of the illness.
