Province stands out in wholesale sales crowd

Manitoba stood out in the crowd as the only province to post an increase in wholesale sales in September, Statistics Canada said today.

The agency said Manitoba’s wholesalers shipped out $1.34 billion worth of goods during the month. That was an increase of 2.7 per cent from August’s $1.31 billion.

It was the wholesale industry’s second straight month of rising sales, after a 1.1 per cent increase in August.

September’s sales total was also a 4.9 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when $1.28 billion worth of goods were sold. The year-over-year gain was the third largest among the provinces.

Nationally, wholesale sales fell 1.4 per cent to $48.8 billion in September. It was the third decline in four months for Canada’s wholesale industry, but was still a 2.2 per cent improvement from a year earlier when $47.7 billion worth of goods were sold.
