Province unveils new farm building codes

The province announced a push to strengthen the building code for agricultural complexes and to introduce a new Farm Building Code to provide enhanced fire protection to the buildings and livestock living in them.

The changes come after consultations by Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, producers and several interest groups.

The building code changes will only apply to new buildings and those being extensively renovated. There will be flexibility within the codes to accommodate the variety of types of buildings being constructed.

The new code and amendments will come into effect Nov. 1.

The announcement follows a summer of devastating hog barn fires in rural Manitoba.
