More than 30 fire departments in southeastern Manitoba and the Interlake have been battling brush fires driven by high winds this Easter weekend.
Dry conditions throughout the province have threatened homes, businesses and forested areas. On Friday, the hotel at the South Beach Casino and Resort was voluntarily evacuated because of the fire threat. The casino was closed for Good Friday but guests staying in the hotel had to leave.
Today, the fire threat there is over and the casino has reopened, as well as its resort on Brokenhead Ojibway Nation. On Friday, smoke from the fires prompted the closure of Highway 59 south of the casino.
Manitoba Conservation is still urging people to avoid outdoor burning, abide by any municipal fire bans and to be careful with the disposal of smoking materials and use of ATVs.
