Province will pay for more police

The Selinger government today said it will pay for 10 additional police officers to hit the street in Winnipeg this year.

The $1.5-million cost will also add 10 more cadets for the Winnipeg Police Service to add to the downtown unit.

Attorney General Andrew Swan added the province is also looking at expanding the cadet program to outside of Winnipeg and will discuss the idea with RCMP.

Swan said the province will also pay for two additional RCMP officers, one officer for the Brandon Police Service and one investigator for Manitoba's Public Safety Investigations Unit, which enforces the province’s Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, the Fortified Buildings Act and the Body Armour and Fortified Vehicle Control Act.

These laws restrict who can own bulletproof clothing and cars, deal with fortified gang properties and shut down buildings linked to drug dealing and prostitution.

Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill said he needs to meet with his executive to see how soon the 10 additional police positions can be added to the next recruit training class and where they were deployed.

During the provincial election campaign, Premier Greg Selinger said a re-elected NDP government would fund the hiring of 50 more police officers over its mandate to specifically walk a beat downtown and along Portage Avenue.
