Province's average weekly earnings, employment stable

WINNIPEG — Average weekly earnings and payroll employment held relatively steady in Manitoba in May, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said today that weekly earnings dipped by a meagre 0.1 per cent to $820.71 from $821.86 in April. And the number of payroll employees — people who work for someone, as opposed to being self-employed — inched up by the same amount to 571,100 from 570,500.

On a year-over-year basis, earnings were up only 1.1 per cent from May of last year, which was the smallest 12-month increase among the provinces, the figures show. The year-over-year payroll employment increase of two per cent was the fourth-largest among the provinces.

Nationally, average weekly earnings rose by 0.5 per cent from April to May — $894.61 versus $890.41 — and by 2.5 per cent from May of last year.

Payroll employment also grew by 0.5 per cent from April to May — 15.2 million versus 15.1 million — and by 2.3 per cent from May 2011.
