Province's manufacturing sees bump in September

Manitoba manufacturers had a busy September, posting one of the biggest sales increases in the country, Statistics Canada said today.

The agency said local factories shipped out $1.31 billion worth of goods during the month. That was an increase of 3.7 per cent from the $1.26 billion worth of goods shipped in August, and was the second biggest provincial gain after Quebec’s 4.2 per cent.

Statistics Canada said the increase reflected higher sales in the durable goods industries, which includes things such as wood products, primary metals, machinery, computer and electronic products, furniture and appliances and components.

September’s total was also a 3.1 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when $1.27-billion dollars worth of goods were sold.

Nationally, manufacturing sales advanced by a mere 0.4 per cent to $49.8 billion from $49.6 billion in August. The year-over-year gain was 1.8 per cent.

Statistics Canada attributed the month-over-month improvement to higher production in the aerospace product and parts industry, and to increased sales of primary metals.
