Provincial electoral map redrawn

The provincial electoral map was radically changed today, taking one riding away from southwestern Manitoba and giving it to the southeastern area of the province.

The final report of the 2008 Electoral Divisions Boundaries Commission retained the same number of total ridings in Manitoba, at 57, but dramatically altered the boundaries of most of the ridings.

The final report maintains 31 ridings in Winnipeg and 26 outside the city. Four ridings remain in the north, with some boundary changes.

However, southeastern Manitoba will now have 14 ridings, a gain of one; and the southwestern region now has eight, a loss of one.
The new boundaries were drawn up by a non-partisan commission following public hearings.

The commission said a shift in population from the southwest to the southeast prompted the shifting of ridings.

The commission made several name changes. Most notable is the former riding of Rupertsland, which becomes Kewatinook, meaning ‘from the north’ in Cree.

There were several boundary changes to the 31 ridings in Winnipeg and some name changes as well.

Could you please provide a map so we can see what the specific changes are? Without a map the story is incomplete.

John, have you guys considered putting in links to non-Free Press sites in your online articles? This one begs for a link to the government's website, presuming there's a new electoral map to see.
