Public Service looks to ease motorists' woes during road work

Winnipeg motorists, rejoice – construction on regional streets might start having less of an impact on traffic.

The possibility came up in some recommendations proposed by the Public Service. The recommendations, which appear in the Establishment of Construction Criteria for Minor Repairs on Regional Streets Report, will try to lessen what may feel like consequences for drivers when contractors work on minor repairs and utility cuts for private customers on regional streets.

Steps the Public Service have recommended include contractors working on weekends or taking 24 hours to complete work, installing steel plating over excavations to allow the opening of traffic lanes during rush hour, and improving communications between the city and its stakeholders when it come to managing lane closure.

The full report is available at http://winnipeg.ca/CLKDMIS/ViewDoc.asp?DocId=12087&SectionId=&InitUrl=

The report will be reviewed by the Standing Policy Committee of Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works on Sept. 11, 2012.
