WINNIPEG - Justice Minister Dave Chomiak and Manitoba’s top law enforcement officials are expected to announce this week a new joint police unit to investigate unsolved cases of murdered and missing women, a provincial spokeswoman said today.

The new investigative unit will be made up of officers from the RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service. The province is expected to contribute new funding to the unit.

"The issue is of great concern to us," the spokeswoman said, who asked not to be named following government policy.

Winnipeg police Chief Keith McCaskill and RCMP ‘D’ Division commanding officer Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson are expected to participate in the announcement.

City police and RCMP have a number of unsolved homicide cases on the books involving women many involved in the city’s sex trade. Many of the victims are aboriginal. There are also a number of outstanding missing person’s cases also involving young aboriginal women.

Justice officials have been looking at creating a task force following the discovery of the body of Cherisse Houle, 17, more than a month ago. The task force took on new urgency this week with the discovery of the body Hillary Angel Wilson, 18, also on the outskirts of the city.
