Search on for woman missing in Belair Provincial Forest

Missing woman Nadia Monico

An RCMP search and rescue team is combing a section of the Belair Provincial Forest, just north of Stead, this morning for a 66-year-old Winnipeg woman who has been missing since early Wednesday.

The woman, identified by RCMP as Nadia Monaco, was apparently picking mushrooms in the woods with a small group of people on Wednesday when she became separated from the others, said Const. Miles Hiebert of the RCMP. She was last seen at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The Mounties are leading the search in co-operation with the provincial fire commissioner's office. A police service dog is also being employed.

Searchers are concerned that the weather has been wet and cold and that the woman is diabetic and requires insulin. They also can’t confirm that she was dressed appropriately for the weather.

"All of those factors contribute to a very worrisome situation," Hiebert said.

The ground search resumed at daylight today, and RCMP say 50 trained searchers, as well as command and support workers, were scouring the woods this morning.

Monaco is described as being lightly dressed in a blue hat, black shirt and grey pants.
