R.I.P., autobin: the weekend in review

A round-up of some of the stories you might have missed over the weekend

Ashes to ashes, rust to rust: City hall reporter Bartley Kives pens an obituary for the much-maligned autobin, soon to disappear from Winnipeg's back lanes.

Homing in on homelessness: More than 300 North American cities have pledged to end homelessness in 10 years. Winnipeg will soon do the same, with the launching of a new high-level task force dedicated to forging the city's first decade-long plan.

From head tax to figurehead: Chinese immigrants, once banned, have risen to the highest echelons of Manitoba. The latest in our Our City, Our World series looks at the history of Winnipeg's Chinese community.

Revolution-ary career step: Winnipeg-born actress Tracy Spiridakos will become TV's latest kick-ass heroine this fall in the J.J. Abrams-produced NBC drama Revolution, set in a near-future world in which all forms of electricity have suddenly ceased to function.

More than joust for fun: Catapult demonstrations, jousting knights and period fashion. A photo slideshow from the Medieval Festival in Cooks Creek, which drew more than 2,000 people to the community.
