Firefighters slightly hurt in major fire on Sherwin Road

A fire burns at a production facility on Sherwin Road in Winnipeg Monday morning after an explosion. Major roads in the area area closed.
WINNIPEG -- Police say a number of police and fire vehicles remain at the scene of a fire at Omniglass on Sherwin Road.
Four firefighters suffered minor injuries when an explosion occurred inside the burning building in the early hours of the morning.

Just one of the firefighters was taken to hospital for treatment, but was released from Health Sciences Centre.
The blaze completed destroyed Omniglass's building at 1205 Sherwin Rd., between Keith Road and Notre Dame Avenue.
A city spokeswoman said a call came in about the fire just after midnight. As firefighters battled flames, an explosion occurred that forced them outside.
Firefighters backed away altogether to let it burn to the ground. It was destroyed, and a demolition crew will rip down the remains of the structure.
Roads were closed in the area, but eastbound Notre Dame is now open to traffic.
Huge plumes of toxic smoke could be seen from several kilometres away as the fire burned for several hours.
Fire officials are looking into the cause of the fire.
Damage was estimated to be "several million dollars," said police.
