Record soybean and corn for grain crops expected this fall in Manitoba

Manitoba farmers expect to harvest record soybean and corn for grain crops this fall, and anticipate huge increases in production for a host of other crops, according to a new survey by Statistics Canada.

The federal agency said local farmers expect to haul in 661,300 tonnes of soybeans and 692,200 tonnes of corn for grain this fall. Both totals are well above the previous annual records for those two crops.

They’re also expecting a 24.7 per cent increase in canola production, to 2.1 million tonnes; a 49 per cent jump in spring wheat production, to 2.8 million tonnes; a 48.2 per cent rise in oats production, to 616,900 tonnes, a 117.7 per cent jump in barley production, to 568,800 tonnes; and a 286.9 per cent jump in sunflower seed production, to 76,600 tonnes.

The forecast is based on the results of a survey of 1,196 Manitoba farmers conducted between Sept. 4 and Sept. 11.
