Report means changes for Inner-workings of PC party

Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative Party released the results of an internal survey today that they hope will help put them into government in 2016.

"To win the next election we must build a stronger and more effective PC Party," PC Leader Brian Pallister said in a statement. "This report continues that construction project."

The report, prepared by senior MLAs Kelvin Goertzen, Bonnie Mitchelson and Myrna Driedger examined how the party raises money, sells memberships and communicates with its supporters.

The report said the PC Party has to do a better job of telling its grassroots members what’s it’s doing, even if it’s through email bulletins.

"Repeatedly, members indicated that the party was overly focused on fundraising and securing donations," the report said. "They expressed frustration that they did not receive more information on the activity of the party or its representatives. This concern was particularly acute, as one would expect, in non-held ridings."

The report also found its members are frustrated that in last year’s provincial election the PCs did little to distinguish themselves from the rival NDP.

"By far the most articulated concern from membership in terms of how they view their membership is that they desire the party to put forward a clear set of principles that differentiate us in the minds of Manitobans," the report said. "They expressed their frustration that recent election campaigns have not done enough to distinguish us from our political opponents and have not clearly represented their views as Progressive Conservatives."

Pallister has said the findings from the report — it was the first time many members had been asked for their opinions — will be used to reorganize the inner-workings of the PCs in advance of the next general election.
