Emergency crews at Balsam Bay Harbour go out on Lake Winnipeg where a report of a truck through the ice is being investigated.

The occupants of a truck that fell through the ice on Lake Winnipeg were found alive late this afternoon.

A 51-year-old Winnipeg man walked from the partially submerged vehicle near the Beaconia Beach area to a nearby residence and got help. He directed searchers to a 54-year-old man from Grand Point who was at the truck and needed medical help.

His condition isn't known at this time.

The pair was on their way to go fishing when their vehicle broke through the ice.

"One individual managed to get to shore and to a house on Patricia Beach," Selkirk RCMP Sgt. Paul Gilligan said.

"He directed us to the other individual on shore and our search and rescue people went to get him," Gilligan said.

The rescue operation had included a search plane circling above the area where a truck reportedly fell through the ice with several people inside.

"Someone is out on the ice. From the distress call, the vehicle was already in the water," Manitoba Conservation officer Rob Belanger told the Free Press earlier in the day from Balsam Harbour on Beaconia Beach.

The call came in from a man in a truck headed out to do some ice fishing, Belanger said.

The caller wasn't alone and managed to give authorities his exact location before the call went dead.

A convoy of eight to 10 snowmobiles with 12-15 men was ready to head out on the ice early this afternoon. The search equipment includes a Zodiac boat and a stretcher enclosed in a windbreak capsule.

Weather was challenging in the area, about 70 minutes north of Winnipeg, with blowing snow and cold temperatures. Visibility was tough on the lake, which rescuers worried would hamper their efforts.

Local residents searched the area briefly around 10 a.m. after the call came in but found nothing, Belanger said.
