Retail sales in Manitoba dipped for fifth straight month

WINNIPEG — Retail sales dipped for the fifth straight month in Manitoba in May, Statistics Canada said today.

Preliminary figures released by the agency show the province’s retailers rang up $1.37 billion worth of sales during the month. That was a decline of 0.6 per cent from April’s $1.38 billion, and followed a 0.3 per cent decline from March to April.

Although sales declined from April to May, the May total was still a 0.9 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when just under $1.36 billion worth of goods were sold.

Nationally, StatsCan said retail sales rose 0.3 per cent to $38.9 billion in May, thanks to gains in six provinces. The May total was also a 3.1 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when $37.7 billion worth of sales were recorded.

StatsCan noted retail sales in Canada have been relatively flat since November of last year.
