Retired Mountie charged with sexually assaulting young relative

  • Print

A retired Manitoba RCMP officer has been charged with sexually abusing a female relative on numerous occasions between 1976 and 1981.

The 76-year-old accused was arrested this week in Nova Scotia following an investigation that actually began in 2006 when the now-adult victim made a complaint. She cited numerous attacks which occurred when she was between the age of nine and 14.

RCMP told the Free Press this case is "complex" but wouldn’t provide further details on why it took seven years to investigate before charges were ultimately laid following consultation with justice officials.

The accused is now being brought back to Manitoba on two counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency. His name is not being released to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

RCMP say all of the incidents occurred in Manitoba. The accused, who retired from the RCMP more than 20 years ago, was not on-duty for any of the alleged offences.
