Rifles empty in second half against Wildcats

The Winnipeg Rifles junior football team failed to score any second-half points and was defeated 34-20 by the Edmonton Wildcats in the Prairie Football Conference season-opening game on Sunday at Canad Inns Stadium.

The game was played at the earlier time of 10 a.m. instead of the scheduled 12:30 p.m .start to make way for a Winnipeg Blue Bombers practice.

The Rifles, who led 20-14 at the half, were led by new starting quarterback John Kiesman, who rushed for a 15-yard touchdown and tossed a 30-yard strike to Brett Carter but was intercepted three times. Rifles kicker Brad Mikoluff booted field goals of 23 yards and 11 yards.

"We had a real letdown in the second half, and I take a lot of it on myself because I need to be better for our team," said Kiesman, who got his first start for the Rifles. "We all have to get better but there's no excuse, especially from the quarterback position, to be playing that way."

Quarterback Tyler Vieira took over the Rifles offence in the fourth quarter but couldn't get anything going as the Wildcats had the ball for most of the final frame.

The Wildcats were led by running back Jordan Samoil who rushed for three touchdowns: a 10-yard run in the second quarter, a two-yard rush in the third quarter and a fourth-quarter major of 25 yards.

Ryan Smith caught a five-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for Edmonton while kicker David Ness booted fourth-quarter field goals of 30 and 21 yards.

Statistics were not available immediately after the game.

The Rifles' next game is Aug. 19 at noon, when they host the Saskatoon Hilltops.
