Rifles name new coach
The Winnipeg Rifles junior football team officially announced the hiring of Ryan Karhut as the fourth head coach in the Prairie Football Conference team's history in a press release late Monday night.
Karhut playedin the PFC for five years as an offensive lineman with the Edmonton Huskies. Following a year at the University of Central Florida, Karhut joined the University of Manitoba Bisons and was a captain of the 2007 Vanier Cup champion team.
Karhut was drafted in 2007 in the Canadian college draft by the Saskatchewan Roughriders but was traded to the Montreal Alouettes, where he played parts of the 2007-08 season.
Most recently, Karhut served as the offensive co-ordinator for the Vidruk AA division champion Kelvin Clippers of the Winnipeg High School Football League.
"The Winnipeg Rifles were thrilled with both the quality and the volume of the applicants for this position," Rifles president Todd Wilson said in a statement. "A host of very qualified applicants resulted in a lengthy decision-making process for the board."
