River crests expected Saturday

The Red River crest is expected to reach Morris and Ste. Agathe today at levels below that of the 2009 flood, Emergency Measures Minister Steve Ashton told the legislature this afternoon.

The Red and Assiniboine rivers are now expected to crest in Winnipeg on Saturday, with levels on the Red at James Avenue predicted to reach between 20.4 feet and 21.3 feet above normal winter ice levels.

Ashton said water flows through the Assiniboine River during this flood season are expected to be more than twice experienced during the record 1976 flood on that river.

Meanwhile, the number of Manitobans now displaced by flooding has now reached 1,981, he said.
