WINNIPEG - The weather is getting warmer and the river trail is getting longer, if not smoother.

The skating trail is now three kilometres long and open to the Hugo Street dock on the Assiniboine River, The Forks said today.

Workers are trying to open the next section of the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail later this week but warmer temperatures and soft ice conditions may put a damper on the skating surface.

"With the unseasonable warm temperatures expected for this week ice conditions may not be perfect," Paul Jordan, The Forks chief operating officer, said in a news release.

"We are advising everyone to check the web site and use caution before heading onto the trail."

It is the Guinness World record holder for the longest naturally-frozen skating trail in the world, with 8.54 kilometres. It is maintained and programmed by The Forks Renewal Corporation and Festival du Voyageur.
