River trail opens for skating again

WINNIPEG — The cold weather is good for something. After a bout of balmy weather benched skaters, Winnipeg's River Trail is making a comeback.

Today, the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail reopened to Hugo Dock and the trail crew is trying to open up new sections for skaters by the beginning of next week.

By Monday, the crew aims to expand the trail on the Red River, opening access points at the Norwood Dock, Tache Dock and Churchill Park, just south of the Redboine Yacht Club. The additions will bring the length of the trail to approximately six kilometres.

People are advised to check the trail web site for updates, ice conditions and further openings - www.rivertrail.ca.

The River Trail holds the Guinness World for the longest naturally-frozen skating trail in the world, with 8.54 kilometres. It is maintained and programmed by The Forks Renewal Corporation and Festival du Voyageur.
