Riverwalk closing for repairs

  • Print

The Assiniboine Riverwalk will be closed beginning Monday, Dec. 9 for repairs to the riverbank.

The affected area will include the riverbank adjacent to the riverwalk from the train bridge near the The Forks to the Legislative Building.

It will be closed to pedestrian traffic Dec. 9 to 21 and Jan. 2 to 31, 2014.

The riverwalk will be open from Dec. 22 to Jan. 1, 2014.

Pedestrians will still be able to use Assiniboine Avenue during the repairs periods.

High river water during the 2011 flood caused extensive damage to the riverbank armour (riprap rock) foundation areas of the Riverwalk. The repairs will stabilize the riverbank and riverwalk by restoring the affected areas to pre-2011 conditions.

A press release from the City of Winnipeg noted that should the Red River Mutual Trail (skating path and warming huts) open while the repairs are being done, the trail will continue to operate.
