Runners brave rain for half-marathon

Rain showers didn't stop 1,900 people from lacing up their shoes and running in the Winnipeg Police Service half-marathon this morning.

The eighth annual event started and finished at Assiniboine Park and is expected to raise about $100,000 for Cops for Cancer. Organizers had initially expected about 2,500 participants, but said the weather may have dissuaded some people from coming out.

Paul Carr, 25, was the first to cross the finish line.

"It got tough. Around the seven or eight (mile mark), I started to feel it," Carr said. "It was a good run."

The event has raised about $580,000 for cancer since its inception.

Several area streets blocked off for the half-marathon are expected to reopen around 11 a.m., including westbound Wellington Crescent between Oxford Street and Assiniboine Park, and northbound Park Boulevard N. from Corydon Avenue to Wellington Crescent.

Westbound Roblin Boulevard from William Clement Parkway to Oakdale Drive will be closed until noon.
