Safe water heavyweights headline event to save experimental lakes

Water activist Maude Barlow and freshwater scientist Dr. David Schindler will team up at a press conference today in the fight to save the Experimental Lakes Area.

As well, a rally tonight in support of ELA will also be announced at the press conference, at 12:30 p.m. in the atrium of Richardson College for the Environment, 599 Portage Avenue, University of Winnipeg.

The Harper Government is terminating the internationally renowned research program, which costs $2 million per year to operate. The Coalition to Save ELA (Experimental Lakes Area) says the unique freshwater science centre is essential to maintain the health of Canadian lakes and fish populations.

Barlow is author, activist, national chairperson for the Council of Canadians, and Senior Advisor on Water to the 63rd President of the UN General Assembly.

Schindler is a world-renowned leading freshwater scientist based at the University of Alberta.
