Salamida shines on the mound as Goldeyes beat Explorers 1-0

  • Print

Thursday night's doubleheader in Sioux City, Iowa, didn't start the way the Winnipeg Goldeyes would have liked. Trailing 5-4 at the outset of the first game — the completion of the rain-delayed Wednesday night contest — it didn't take long for the Sioux City Explorers to take charge, and the Goldeyes fell 9-4.

But the second game of the night — the originally scheduled contest, shortened to seven innings — was a different story. Left-handed pitcher Chris Salamida lifted the Goldeyes to a 1-0 win in a shutout where he only gave up three hits, managed six strikouts and allowed no walks. He's now 4-0 on the season with a 2.48 ERA.

Salamida wasn't the only one who had a strong night. While none of his hits resulted in runs — Luis Alen scored the only run of the game — the recently returned Yurendell de Caster went three for three at the plate. He's now batting .400 for the Goldeyes.

With the win, the Goldeyes took the series against the Explorers three games to one, and begin a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones Friday night. The Goldeyes sit two-and-a-half games back of the Gary SouthShore RailCats for the American Association wildcard spot.
