Scientists, students protest cuts to Experimental Lakes

Dozens of people gathered underneath the canopy at The Forks on Sunday to protest federal government cuts to the Experimental Lakes Area.
The event, organized by the Coalition to Save ELA, saw scientists and students take to the podium to tell audiences about the research they conducted into areas such as water quality, chemical contamination and its effects on lake organisms.
Scientists even set up tables to display some of the equipment they use, including an underwater thermometer, and showed cups containing some of the lively water insects they study.
NDP MP Niki Ashton and provincial Liberal leader Jon Gerrard took to the stage to condemn the federal cuts which threaten to kill the research area.
"We have seen first hand how amazing ELA can be," Gerrard said, noting that his children studied there. "ELA has nurtured so many who are making a difference around the world."
