Scottish flag flies over city hall today

A new flag will fly today at Winnipeg City Hall as Scotland’s national flag will be raised at 11:30 a.m. by Mayor Sam Katz.

The raising of the Saltire, Scotland’s national flag which features a white diagonal cross on a blue background, will mark the 138th annual celebration of St. Andrew’s Day in Manitoba. St. Andrews is the patron saint of Scotland and St. Andrew’s Day has been designated as Nov. 30.

Katz will be assisted in the flag-raising by Vernon A. Ross, president of the St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg.

The actual flag being raised today originally flew over the City Council Building in Edinburgh, Scotland and was presented to the City of Winnipeg in 1983 by the Rt. Hon. Tom Morgan, Lord Provost (Mayor) of Edinburgh which is Scotland’s capital.
