Winnipeg Police confirmed this afternoon that the body recovered from the Red River downtown just before noon is that of the man who drowned Wednesday night.

The man’s friend swam to shore. A search began for the missing man in the river Wednesday night and resumed this morning.

Michalyshen said alcohol may have been a factor in what prompted the two men to jump into the Red River.

The identity of the dead man is not being released.
