Second boy charged in Long Plain shooting
A second 15-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder for the shooting of a Winnipeg man on the Long Plain First Nation early Saturday morning.
RCMP continue the investigation into the shooting, where Barry Myran was shot in the head while visiting his father’s home on the reserve.
RCMP announced their first arrest in the case Monday, a 15-year-boy charged with attempted murder.
News reports said Myran was at his father’s home on the reserve when four youths knocked on the door around 1 a.m.., asking to be let inside on the pretext of getting in from the cold.
Once inside, a confrontation took place and Myran was shot in the head. The four youths then fled.
Family members said Myran was taken to hospital in critical condition and placed on life support.
A spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said Myran remains in critical condition this morning.
Reserve residents and officials blame the scourge of illegal drugs for the violence in the community.
A 24-year-old man was killed in an altercation on the reserve Jan. 2. Cody Alexander Schmidt, 21, of Long Plain, has been charged with second-degree murder.
RCMP are asking anyone with information about the Saturday morning shooting to contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP detachment, 204-857-4445 or Manitoba Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
