Second quarter sees rise in non-residential construction

WINNIPEG — Manitoba had the second biggest increase in non-residential construction spending in the country during the second quarter of this year.

Revised, seasonally-adjusted figures released today by Statistics Canada show $297.2 million was spent on commercial, industrial and institutional/governmental construction projects between April 1 and June 30 of this year.

That was an increase of 5.1 per cent from the first quarter of the year, when $282.9 million was spent, and a gain of 14.8 per cent from a year earlier, when spending totalled $259 million.

The quarter-to-quarter increase was the second largest among the provinces, while the year-over-year improvement was the third biggest.

Canada saw spending increase by a modest 1.2 per cent from the first to second quarters — $11.3 billion versus $11.1 billion — and decline by 0.1 per cent from a year earlier, when $11.3 billion was spent.
