Extreme cold forces cancellation of classes in some school divisions

Winnipeg School Division has cancelled bus service for today, but schools remain open.

Meanwhile, school divisions across southern Manitoba – including Seine River, Sunrise and Prairie Rose - have cancelled classes today due to extreme cold weather.

In Seine River, which includes over 3,800 students south of Winnipeg (St. Norbert, Ste. Adolphe, Lorette, Richer), over 70 percent of students ride buses, and the division policy is to cancel classes when wind chill values plummet below -45, which was the Environment Canada reading this morning.

Staff are still expected to report, Seine River superintendent Michael Borgfjord said.

"Buses can break down," Borgfjord said. "Kids can be standing outside. Buses can be late. It’s just too much."

Sunrise includes the area northeast of Winnipeg, including the communities of Beausejour and Lac du Bonnet, while the Prairie Rose region includes Carman, Elm Creek and Miami schools.
