Selinger seeks inclusion in Devils Lake talks

Manitoba’s cross-border water woes require a high-level meeting between both federal governments, Manitoba, North Dakota and Minnesota, Premier Greg Selinger says.

Manitoba has been battling North Dakota for years over the Devils Lake outlet, which threatens to contaminate Manitoba’s waterways.

The U.S. federal government is days away from releasing a task force report on ways to deal with Devils Lake, and a delegation of North Dakota politicians were in Washington D.C. today in meetings about the report. It appears as though Canada isn’t in the loop.

"We need to make sure the threats to Manitoba’s water systems are understood and taken into account when the U.S. deals with these recommendations," said Selinger in a statement.

Selinger said he’s been talking with leaders from North Dakota and Minnesota and with American Ambassador David Jacobson and former Manitoba premier Gary Doer, now Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. He said it’s time for everyone to get around the same table and deal with the issue.
