A restaurant in Morris that is set to close next Saturday because of prejudice against its two gay owners will serve Premier Greg Selinger on its penultimate day of operation.
Selinger announced today via Twitter that he will visit the town next week as part of a southern Manitoba tour to discuss flood preparations with local officials.
He will have lunch next Friday at the Pots N Hands restaurant, which has received national attention after its owners, two gay men, announced they were closing their establishment after enduring homophobic comments. The eatery has been open for only four months.
In a tweet today, Selinger wrote: "Congrats Mayor (Gavin) van der Linde & Morris on stand against racism and homophobic bullying. Lunch at Pots N Hands next week during flood prep"
In an interview, Selinger said he wanted to express his support for the restaurant as well as for van der Linde.
The mayor has spoken out against homophobia and racism exhibited by some elements of his community. He’s made it clear that such prejudicial sentiments do not reflect the majority of citizens in his town.
This past winter, an editorial in a Morris newspaper attacked Aboriginal people, accusing them of being lazy and corrupt.
Selinger telephoned the mayor today to say he would be visiting and to commend him for his leadership.
"He’s just been a strong advocate for an inclusive community and to make the case that his citizens are people that respect others," the premier said.
