Semi kills man walking near Steinbach
A pedestrian from Steinbach was killed when he was hit by a semi truck early this morning near Steinbach, RCMP said.
Friends identified the man as Dillon Lupky, 19, although RCMP have not released his name.
Lupky was struck by the semi shortly after 1 a.m. on Highway 52, about 6 kilometres east of Steinbach.
The driver, a 39-year-old man from Brandon, was driving in the westbound lane on the highway when he hit what he thought was wildlife at first. He stopped a short distance later and realized it was a pedestrian, RCMP said.
They added the pedestrian may have been walking on the road. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Shauntel Friesen, Lupky’s friend, said he walked everywhere and it wasn’t unusual for him to be out walking in the middle of the night.
"He doesn’t have a car and I think he likes walking," said Friesen.
"He was hilarious, always made people laugh. Very humble and kind," she added. "If you were having a bad day he would make it better."
Highway 52 was closed for about four hours after the crash this morning.
The semi driver was not under the influence of alcohol. The Steinbach RCMP are investigating the incident with assistance from the RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist.
