Sentencing hearing underway for girl involved in beating death

A sentencing hearing is underway for a Winnipeg girl who was just 12-years-old when she participated in the violent group beating death of an innocent bystander.

The teen, now 15, can`t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. She was originally charged with second-degree murder but has pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter.

The Crown told court today they are seeking the maximum youth sentence of three years custody and supervision. They can`t seek an adult sentence against the girl because Canadian law requires an offender to be at least 14 at the time.

The girl`s lawyer has requested an adjournment until March 20 to provide the court more information about plans for his client once she is released from the Manitoba Youth Centre, where she has been since her arrest.

Audrey Cooper, 34, was attacked outside a Spence Street rooming house in October 2006 as she returned home from picking up groceries at a nearby store.

Police say four youths took turns beating and kicking her as she lay on the ground.

Two girls and a boy remain before the courts and are set to go on trial for murder in May.  The girls were both 14, while the boy was 15, at the time of the slaying.
