Sharp improvement at Bomber rookie camp on Day 2

Day 2 of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers rookie camp is in the books and as expected, the second go-around was a sharp improvement over the initial outing.
"The guys played fast today," Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice told reporters after the hour-long session at Canad Inns Stadium Thursday.
"Rookie camp from Day 1 to Day 2, the players have a much better understanding. We had a chance to meet for an hour today, we had a chance to watch film (Wednesday).
"We have talented guys competing for a couple of spots."
LaPolice singled out the receivers as an area he’s kept a close eye on. The Bombers have nine rookie receivers in the fold right now, with a few players –guys like Chris Matthews, Doug Pierce, and Kurt Adams – standing at 6-foot-5 and higher. The receivers have impressed the coaching staff with their quickness, the coach said.
"They can change direction very well," he said. "Matthews has some fluidity for a big kid. All of them do. We’ll engross them in the system and see how they do when the lights come on."
Another notable participant: Quarterback Joey Elliott.
The third-year pivot missed most of 2011 with a torn ACL in his left knee. He’s back on the field this week and throwing the ball well, despite wearing a knee brace for the first time in his career.
"Knee feels great," he said. "If your boss tells you to wear a suit to work every day, you’re going to wear the suit every day. Same thing with the knee brace; it’s just something I have to put on before taking the field."
Winnipeg’s rookie camp roster swelled to 35 players Thursday with the arrivals of receivers Paul Hubbard and Victor James Wednesday evening.
Defensive back Demond Washington has yet to participate in the camp but he’s expected to be on the field Friday (10:30 a.m.), when the club wraps the three-day rookie acclimatization.
The Bomber veterans have medicals Saturday. Main camp opens at Canad Inns Stadium Sunday morning.
