Shaw offering free wireless Internet service to their customers at city facilities

Shaw Communications is now offering free wireless Internet service to their own customers at City of Winnipeg libraries, pools, arenas, community centres and other facilities.

On Tuesday, Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz announced a non-exclusive deal with Shaw that allows the Calgary-based firm to place their WiFi equipment in city facilities.

Other communications companies, such as MTS or Rogers, would be free to do the same, Katz said.

MTS has offered wireless Internet to its at Pan Am Pool, the North Centennial Recreation Centre and all 20 city libraries since 2007. The city pays for this service and the hourly charge for the service is $1.

The deal is a means of providing WiFi service at no cost to taxpayers, Katz said.

Shaw will cover the city's electrical bills relating to the service, vice-president Cam Kernahan said.

During the 2006 civic election, Katz promised to create a downtown-wide wireless network.

That effort is ongoing, Katz said.
