Simpson in, Brink to to start for Bombers
Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans will have to wait at least one more day to find out the fate of injured starting quarterback Buck Pierce.
Team officials said Monday that they do not expect to have a definitive prognosis on Pierce’s injured left foot until sometime later today.
A plan to make Pierce available to the media on Monday was scrapped. It’s expected Pierce will now speak with the media on Tuesday.
Pierce will not travel with the team on Tuesday when they fly to Toronto, where the 0-3 Bombers play the 1-2 Argonauts Wednesday night.
Backup QB Alex Brink will get his first start of the 2012 season for the Bombers Wednesday night, as will running back Chad Simpson.
The Bombers announced Simpson will start in Toronto following practice at Canad Inns Stadium Monday.
Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice said Simpson, a former NFLer, will start at tailback in place of Bloi-Dei Dorzon and will be backed up by non-import Nathan Riva.
Dorzon, who started the first three games of the season for the Bombers, will not dress for the Bombers.
Simpson got hurt in training camp and has yet to play in the regular season. LaPolice still had concerns about Simpson’s ability to make sharp cuts as recently as Sunday, but came away satisfied after speaking to him.
"In talks with Chad, he says he feels really good and he’s got no pain and laterally he’s moving fine," LaPolice said Monday.
"I had a real heart-to-heart with him -- ’You know, understand it’s a little different, I don’t have a lot of backups. If you go on, someone else is coming off.’
"He said, ’No, trust me coach. I think I’ll be good."
Simpson will be the only injured Bombers player who will return to the lineup this week. The only other possible returnee this week was offensive tackle Andre Douglas, but LaPolice ruled out his return following practice on Monday.
FIELDNOTES -- The Argos announced Monday that they had placed kicker Noel Prefontaine on the nine-game injured list with a bad hip and signed import kicker Swayze Waters as his replacement.
