Sixth person charged in teen's beating death

Winnipeg Police didn’t have to look far when searching for another suspect in the brutal beating death of a 16-year-old boy in early September — they found their man in the Provincial Remand Centre, already charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder on another killing.

Winnipeg Police said they charged Michael Okemow, 24, Tuesday morning with manslaughter for the beating death of Paris "Parrot" Bruce.

But Okemow, 24, had been taken into custody Oct. 3 and charged in connection with the shooting death four days earlier of Jordan Houle and the wounding of another man.

Okemow is the sixth man charged with Bruce’s death, whose attack is believed to be part of a dispute between two rival aboriginal gangs.

There doesn’t appear to be a motive for the Houle killing, who was fatally shot after leaving a beer vendor in the 600-block of Maryland Street.

A second man, Edward Arthur Coutu, 27, has also been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder for the Sept. 29 shootings on Maryland Street.

Bruce was beaten in what police described as a savage attack by a group of individuals in the 300-block of Aberdeen Avenue. He died from his injuries a few days later.
