Skelton wins men's amateur golf title
PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE - Jesse Skelton of Breezy Bend is the new Manitoba Men's Amateur golf champion.
Skelton shot an even-par 70 on Portage Golf Club this afternoon in a wild wind to score a two-shot victory over Glenboro's Josh Wytinck.
Wytinck birdied four of the last five holes at Portage but the pressure was a little too late to stop Skelton, who finished in a tie for second in last year's amateur at his home club.
Skelton shot 10-under-par 270 at 6,311-yard Portage over the four days. when he put his wedge approach on the 18th green about 30 feet away, he had four putts to win and only required two.
Wytinck, who works at Pine Ridge, birdied the final hole from 12 feet and put up a 68 today to finish at 272.
Third, five back, was 36-hole co-leader Derek East of St. Charles, who struggled to a 74 today, albeit partly by being aggressive late in today's round. That cost him a couple of bogeys as he was desperately trying to make up ground.
Pulling into fourth was two-time amateur champion Garth Collings of Breezy Bend, who was 69 for a 276 total.
Only three players broke par today while battling the howling west wind.
